Among the must-see places in Kavieng is Nusa Island Retreat which is easily accessible through a 5 minute dinghy ride from the Kavieng town wharf. The beauty of Nusa is in the way it was planned. The bungalows are low impact and eco-sensitive with accommodation in the form of traditional island style bungalows. Most of are set on the water's edge and all have great views.
Tame birds like hornbills, eagles, lorikeets can be seen perched on trees that line up the island while a very imposing skeleton of a huge croc is on display. At Nusa you can snorkel, swim, scuba dive, or just lazy around lying on a hammock while sipping your favourite drink. In my case I got on one of the swings hanging by the water’s edge.
Our tour guide also took us to this swim hole about 85 kilometres off Kavieng. It was fun watching the kids plunge into the crystal clear waters ala Tarzan. It’s a shame we didn’t have enough time to take a swim.
Another must see is this very tall tree house, known to be the tallest in the world.
And if you need seafood fix, then you ought to check the seafood buffet at the Kavieng Hotel which is on every Friday. After all Kavieng is the seafood capital of the nation! Never have I seen so much lobsters and mud crabs in my entire life. They even have fresh rock oysters.
And after you have had enough seafood and sightseeing for the day you can just sit and relax and enjoy the sunset along
